Gas Board 2

Oh joy – more Gas Board shenanigans.

So after jumping through hoops trying to find out who I need to ask to move the gas meter from under the sink to the exterior wall, I finally get someone to come and give me a quote for the works.

??910.

Not saying anything else…… see previous post…..

Anyway, I’ve also recently had a letter from another contractor ‘working on behalf of my gas supplier’ telling me that I need to have my meter replaced as it’s too old and they need to put a new one in to ensure ‘continued accuracy’. OK, fair enough, I confirmed the appointment slot (can you call between 08:00 and 20:00 a slot? It’s more of a gaping void really!).

I have to say the bloke who did just turn up was pleasant – even if he was wetting himself with laughter. He took one look at the space under the kitchen sink and said; “well unless you’re going to remove the entire sink unit and cupboard, there’s no way in hell we can change that.” Having spent a small fortune getting a new kitchen installed about 4 years ago, there’s no way I am going to “remove the entire sink unit and cupboard”.

Still, he did suggest that I do nothing and just ignore the letters I was bound to receive about making a new appointment. In his own words, the gas board will put a new smart meter in themselves soon enough, and as it’s under the sink and needs to be powered, they’ll have to move it themselves for safety reasons!

Bugger it, I’ll just wait until the Smart metering project goes live and they’ll have to deal with it! Hopefully I can get the meter moved outside then.

You want how much to move my gas meter?? It’s from the inside of the kitchen wall to the outside. I’m not asking it to be gold plated or moved to Mars, it’s a distance of 2 bricks! The damn hole is already there where the gas pipe currently comes in.

£910 for fsck all. You bunch of piss taking con merchants.

As you may have noticed, I’m not amused by this.

New phone

I’ve been toying with the idea of a new phone for a while now, but never really taken the plunge. Android is looking like the best choice, as pretty as the iPhone is, I’d actually like a phone to be able to fulfil its basic function of making calls before I worry about being able to track my UPS shipments on-line or see the snow depth at some ski resort.

Before I get ranted at, that’s personal experience. I sit in a room with various techy people, and there are at least 4 iPhones (and 1 iPad) of various ages in here with me. Some days all I can here is ALL of them swearing that they can’t get a signal to make a call. And no, not all of them are on the same network…. Me, well I sit here with a knackered on Nokia 6300 and I’ve never not been able to make a call. Stuff like that puts me off.

I’m not saying that Android is any better, but from what I’ve seen, the niggles with it are minor and relate more to the rapid development of the OS leaving issues in older apps rather than fundamental flaws. That and the open nature of the source code meaning that people port it to inappropriate hardware.

I may just keep the Nokia…. at least until my daughter breaks it.

Well it’s progress of sorts.

Woo-hoo – a week of actually managing to write code instead of trying very, very hard not to kill our new ‘developers’.  I say developers, but some of the mistakes are not what I would expect from experienced staff….. An “experienced” developer asking me what SVN/CVS is does sort of set alarm bells off.

Anyway, I’m still failing in a big way to get the new 7MC box finished. Having said all that, I have managed to do a clean build of Win7, got 7MC running, installed and configured the various plug-ins as well as  having the whole thing in a new Antec MicroFusion case. Hell even the VFD appears to be working correctly! I’ve got DVRMS Toolbox and ComSkip installed, just need to find the time to set them up correctly.

Actually, the biggest problem is that the WHS suddenly seems to be playing up – it’s failing to resume from hibernate. It just sits there with the last couple of bars unfilled and I have to manually re-start the box and then tell it to throw away the current hibernate data before it will re-start. Trouble is I’ve got no idea why it has suddenly started to do this. I (stupidly) hoped the issue would resolve itself, but as usual, when I’m not there to deal with it, the failure of the resume means the other half can’t get to her emails or photos and so the WAF plummets!

Looks like the next ‘free’ evenings will be spent in WHS land….. I’m never getting this 7MC built am I?
