VortexBox

One of the many HTPC/Home Automation/Gadget sites that I subscribe to is DistroWatch.com (http://distrowatch.com/) and occasionally it throws up a gem.

VortexBox (http://vortexbox.org) allows you to build an OpenSource Audio server that also supports automatic CD ripping, tagging and artwork. It also supports some limited DVD ripping to MKV as well, but I’ve not tried this yet.

I’ve installed in on a VM and the Fedora based OS worked fine… only issue I had was it didn’t like the DVD drive on the main machine. The errors are NOT VortexBox related, but are common across other Linux distros as well.

Still, I intend to try and find time to throw it onto a real PC sometime this weekend and give it a go.

Lazy, lazy, lazy

So I admit it again, I suck. I’ve not updated this blog in so long that it’s starting to get embarrassing!

To be fair though, the imminent arrival of my second child has meant that A) I’m losing my study/workshop so I’ve got nowhere to do any playing with new things. B) Converting the study into a nursery takes time….

The lack of projects that I blogged about before has spread. The new employer provides satellite TV for free, so the purchase of a compatible 1TB PVR means that even the need to replace the ageing Toppy has gone…. Oh and FreeNAS has gone all corporate with the release of FreeNAS 8, so that’s one less thing to play with as well….

I think I might fire up the VM and play with VortexBox…… because I REALLY need another piece of specialised hardware……..
